Legend was a project proposed to me by a friend, it took him a long time to get me on board. The basis of the idea was to make a wall hanging, an engraved picture of the centre piece from "The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table", an album by Rick Wakeman. I spent a long time studying the intricate gatefold artwork and working out how I could interpret it. Originally it was to be engraved on to two pieces of glass 6mm thick, but I soon realized that the weight would be too great, and switched to a high quality polycarbonate material. The idea was to engrave some of the details on the back of the front sheet, other details on the front of the second sheet and the final layer would be on the reverse of the second sheet. This would help establish depth and perspective.. By sending different colour light through the materials, generated by LED lights mounted in the frame should build a multicolour picture with the light. Needing to have a frame to hold the lights meant I had the chance to play with some detail work on the frame.
The Engraved Picture
This is the picture, engraved on two panels. The design is cut quite deeply into the polycarbonate surfaces. The white figure to the left in the forground is engraved on the reverse side of the front panel. The darker figure on the right is engraved on nthe front of the back panel. A lot of bthe scenery is engraved on the reverse of the back panel. The two panels are backed down onto black velvet.
